Summer 2020

We have moved to virtual/online classes for Summer 2020.

For camps that include kits/materials, these will be delivered to the specific Community Ed/Parks & Rec offices by Thursday before the start of camp.

Virtual: EFK Magic School Bus STEM Club S4

Calling new and returning students! The Engineering For Kids STEM Club is now going virtual! Using The Magic School Bus books and episodes, each class introduces students to a new, hands-on, lesson featuring STEM topics. For each lesson, students focus on developing 21st Century skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and peer collaboration. These life skills provide students with the confidence to approach challenges in their lives and realize that they can succeed in almost anything! Classes will be taught LIVE by one of our EFK teachers via a district-approved platform.
Session 4 – This session takes students under the sea to learn about coral reefs, goes to space to land on the moon; learn about what makes a sound and goes inside a hurricane.

Materials & Equipment:

  • Internet access
  • Student kits will be delivered to the Community Ed/Parks & Rec office for parents to pick-up before the start of class (by Thursday the week before class starts). One kit/log-in per enrollment but siblings may join the class and work together.
  • Students will need to provide the following basic supplies: paper, scissors, ruler, glue, tape, pencil, markers and other coloring materials.
  • Tablet or laptop to join the class.
  • A parent or responsible adult is requested to be on-hand at the start of each class to help with any technical difficulties. Kids will need a workspace that can get messy and access to a sink. Younger kids may require more supervision.
Virtual: STEM Club 4- Mechanical

Coding helps develop your child’s creativity, problem solving skills, teamwork and technology knowledge in an engaging, collaborative way though fun and practical challenges. Each 4-day session introduces students to a different coding activity to develop 21st Century skills and bring authentic learning as students get to build something that they can share with family and friends. This class is for those who have not taken our Coding Club classes as students will keep in pace with the class. Classes will be taught LIVE by one of our EFK teachers via a district approved platform.

APP DEVELOPMENT
App development has increased manifold in the past 5 years due to lower costs and easier access to essential tools, so give your engineer the knowledge to stay ahead in today’s technological society. We’re offering a unique experience in which students get to code, test, and create their own apps in real-time using an easy-to-understand format. The best part about this program is that they’ll be able to save their created apps right to their (or your own) devices for play anywhere, anytime!

• This is for students who have not taken our Coding Club App Development class yet.
• Laptop with a mouse/mousepad and keyboard and camera, and the ability to join the live lesson (ideally a separate device like a phone, laptop or another tablet).
• A parent or responsible adult is requested to be on-hand at the start of each class to help with any technical difficulties

Virtual: Coding Club - Creative Game Design

Coding helps develop your child’s creativity, problem solving skills, teamwork and technology knowledge in an engaging, collaborative way though fun and practical challenges. Each 4-day session introduces students to a different coding activity to develop 21st Century skills and bring authentic learning as students get to build something that they can share with family and friends. This class is for those who have not taken our Coding Club classes as students will keep in pace with the class. Classes will be taught LIVE by one of our EFK teachers via a district approved platform.

CREATIVE GAME DESIGN
Game Design is a multifaceted discipline that has many requirements beyond simply coding. This class dives into the creative aspects of Game Design as students come up with their own stories to tell through the medium of a platforming game. Students will do worldbuilding activities to ensure their games have a cohesive theme and vision as they create their characters and levels. All of these will culminate in a class-wide arcade day, where students will get to show off their games to the entire class!

• A tablet that has the free Bloxels Edu App downloaded onto it and the ability to join the live lesson (ideally a separate device like a phone, laptop or another tablet).

Virtual: Coding Club - Scratch 3.0 Basic Games

The Engineering For Kids CODING Club is going virtual! Coding helps develop your child’s creativity, problem solving skills, teamwork and technology knowledge in an engaging, collaborative way though fun and practical challenges. CODING IN SCRATCH 3.0 – BASIC GAMES

Scratch 3.0 has landed, so stay ahead of the curve with this introduction class. In Coding in Scratch 3.0: Basic Games, students learn the fundamentals of computer programming by seeing how to build their own games. Coding theory is taught through practical tasks, so students don't just learn how computer code works; they learn why it's done that way. Jumpy Monkey shows them how to simulate gravity in their games, or they can give Dog's Dinner a try to learn about collision detection. What's more, this new version of Scratch will also let you code and play games on tablets, and play the games you create on smart phones!

Virtual: Intro to 3D Printing

Students will be learning the ropes of 3D modeling and printing using CAD software (computer-aided design). Lessons will begin with creating basic shapes and progressing to using more complex tools to create their design. Their teacher-approved designs that fit within the given parameters will be printed for them and dropped off at Community Ed a week after the class ends. Classes will be taught LIVE by one of our EFK teachers via a district-approved platform.

Flex: Virtual Minecraft Madness

EFK Flex Programs consists of 4 pre-recorded videos that students can follow at their own pace.  Videos will be sent via a link with a password.

Minecraft is an expansive game that lets players design and create unique worlds with amazing structures Explore engineering concepts through Minecraft in this pre-recorded video series. This class will introduce students to potential & kinetic energy, electrical engineering through Redstone, chemical engineering through farming and more!

Materials & Equipment;
• computer/laptop, a mouse (recommended but not mandatory) OR Gaming Console
(PS4/XBox/Nintendo Switch)
• Any Modern Version of Minecraft with Creative Mode; or purchase Minecraft Java for $26.95 at

Flex: Virtual Kodu Kart Racing

EFK Flex Programs consists of 4 pre-recorded videos that students can follow at their own pace.  Videos will be sent via a link with a password.

Race to the finish and create your own racing game in Microsoft’s Kodu gaming environment. From terrain design to enemy selection, students are placed at the wheel and given full control to design their own video game while exploring the foundations of coding. Flex: Virtual Coding with Scratch

EFK Flex Programs consists of 4 pre-recorded videos that students can follow at their own pace.  Videos will be sent via a link with a password.

What’s more fun than playing an interactive video game? Writing one! Video sensing allows students to design and program their own video games and then test them by interacting with the program via webcam. In this Scratch program, students create their own games, art, and musical instruments while exploring coding foundations. Get up and get moving with Engineering for Kids and Scratch!

Materials & Equipment:
• computer/laptop
• A webcam
• a mouse (recommended but not mandatory)
• Solid Internet Connection for watching EFK Flex Videos and accessing Scratch at (scratch.mit.edu) No
download is required, however you can download it if you would like to use it offline.
• All of these lessons utilize the webcam functionality in your web browser. If you’re using an external webcam, please make sure all necessary drivers have been installed and updated. The driver should install automatically when plugging your webcam into the USB port. If you’re having trouble connecting your webcam you’ll need to review the instructions provided from your manufacturer.
