Our Philosophy & Perspective

At Backyard Band Jams, we believe that music is a powerful tool for growth, connection, and self-expression - especially for young children. Our mission is to create a welcoming space where families can explore the joy of music together, building lifelong skills and memories along the way.

Music is for Everyone
It’s not about being perfect—it’s about participation and connection. Whether you're an experienced musician or someone who’s never sung a note, the benefits of music-making are for everyone. We believe that engaging with music doesn’t require mastery; the joy comes from the act of singing, moving, and playing together. We know children learn through play, and foster an environemnt where children are free to learn, observe and express - in whatever way is appropriate for their developmental stage.

The Power of Repetition
Consistency and repetition are at the heart of our program. Repeating musical patterns and songs helps children internalize the building blocks of music—rhythm, melody, and pitch—which are essential for developing long-term musical skills. That’s why we emphasize enrolling in our full 10-week series; it gives children the repetition they need to grow musically, while reinforcing what they learn week by week.
That said, some experiential music making is better than none, so we do offer drop in Jams too.

Community & Connection
Our classes are not just about music—they’re about building bonds. Parents, caregivers, and children come together to share in the experience, connecting with each other and the broader community. When families participate together, it fosters a deeper sense of belonging and joy. That’s why we encourage grownups to get involved—children learn best from those they love and trust.

Support Beyond Class
We want the learning to continue at home! Families enrolled in the full series will have access to our curated playlist and custom coloring book with songs we are playing within a series, making it easy to reinforce the music-making fun between Jams. Whether it’s singing along in the car or dancing in the living room, we provide the tools to help keep the music alive throughout the week.

Flexibility with Structure
While our goal is to offer structured, consistent classes, we understand that life can sometimes get in the way. That’s why we offer make-up Jams for missed classes—so you can stay engaged, even if something unexpected comes up. Drop in Jams are also an option, if a full series does not work with your schedule.

A Commitment to Quality
From making sure we are using clean instruments, to being aware that food allergies are real threat to some families, to creating spaces which are as child safe as possible - we care about the comfort of our Jammers!
In addition to making our spaces welcoming and safe, we are aware that quality teaching is essential as well. We frequently participate in professional development experiences so we continue to grow as musicians and teachers, enabling us to provide rich, playful, educational environemnts for our families.
