Meisner Foundations Lab: The Art of Listening

"I found such a deep connection — not only to those in the cohort, but to my own creative well of emotions." — Fabi C., Spring 2026 Cohort

The Art of Listening lab is the easiest way into the EAST Acting Studio — a single drop-in session of Meisner-based training, no series and no commitment required.

We begin where truthful acting begins: listening. Through structured partner exercises, you'll practice responding instinctively to another person rather than manufacturing emotion. The work is simple and profound.

In a single lab, we focus on:

  • The Repetition Exercise
  • Listening and responding truthfully in the moment
  • Quieting self-consciousness
  • Getting out of your own head

Depending on who's in the room, we may go further — cold readings or other Meisner tools like the Independent Activity or the Knock on the Door. Each lab stands on its own, so come to one or come to several.

There is no pressure to be impressive. There is no performance required. This is a space to build presence — to experience how much more alive storytelling becomes when you stop trying and start responding.

Labs run on a rotating schedule of days and times through August. All experience levels welcome. The full 8-week Meisner Foundations series returns this fall.

"The Art of Listening became a weekly place for me to let go of daily distractions, get out of my own way, and reconnect with my inner humanity and the humanity of others through simple, grounded, present attention." — P. Cruz, MFA, Yale School of Drama & Spring 2026 Cohort
