In this two-day, 10-hour workshop, students will explore the concept of “designing the void” by using negative space as a central element in fused glass artwork. Suitable for both beginners and experienced creatives, this workshop focuses on techniques that emphasize absence and layered depth to create visually compelling glass pieces.

What you’ll learn:

Day 1

  • How to work with fine frit and glass powders to begin building the foundation of your designs.
  • How to control flow and opacity to define and shape negative space.

Day 2

  • How to refine and complete your project
  • Dive deeper into layering techniques, kiln considerations, and finishing processes.
  • Explore metal inclusions, silver and palladium, mica powders along with fine powder techniques and how they change and react in the firing process.

You’ll go home with:

A finished 30cm round artwork, created samples of inclusions and the confidence and skills needed to continue exploring these techniques in their own studio practice.

You will need to bring:

  • 3 coloured opaque fine frit – approximately 300 - 400 grams per colour
  • 3 x same colours as above but in powder form approximately 250 – 300gms per colour
  • 1 x fine sifter for powders
  • Long needle nose tweezers
  • Scissors (a good pair for cutting crisp lines)
  • Ruler displaying millimetres
  • Pencil & rubber
  • ¼’ soft flat brush
  • 1 x metal teaspoon (from the kitchen will do)
  • Fine black sharpie permanent marker
  • Note pad
  • P2 particulate face mask (essential)
  • Glass cutting tools, including:
  • Glass cutter
  • Running pliers
  • Grozing pliers

There are a range of other materials required for this workshop, however these will be provided, at no additional cost.
