A great way to develop songwriting skill and increase the variety of songs one writes is to experiment with different song forms. We'll explore the variety and history of song forms used in folk, blues, country and pop music, look at the function of various song parts - verse, chorus, bridge, refrain, etc. - and experiment with using new forms in our own songs. Each week we will explore a different form and look at examples in historical context. Homework will be to write a song in the form discussed that week. Participants will come away with a deepened understanding of song forms and a variety of forms to use in writing their own songs.
