Nonprofit organization, the Creativity Shell and their new mobile sewing unit “Jerry the Bus” has been awarded the Let Creativity Happen Grant from the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs and the Houston Arts Alliance. The organization plans to teach sewing classes in the streets to Houston’s Kids!

For those of you that do not know about the Creativity Shell, they are a Houston organization on a mission to use creative trades such as sewing/textile arts to educate and inspire the next generation of makers.  The organization teaches classes to students in schools, libraries and shelters that rescue children from homelessness and human trafficking. Classes are designed to educate and inspire students by teaching them essential life and practical skills.

Their mobile sewing unit “Jerry the Bus” is fully equipped with creative supplies such as sewing machines, fabrics, notions and more!  Students participating in the Let Creativity Happen project will be sewing Giving Bags which students can keep or fill up with various items and give away.

Asked where the name “Sewing in the Streets” came from, “I was thinking of the song Dancing in the Streets and I thought it would be great to have people doing the same thing but instead of dancing, they would be sewing instead.” Says founder and executive director of the Creativity Shell, Shelancia Daniel.

Parents who wish to register their children for one of the Sewing in the Streets workshops can register online for a 1/2 hour sewing workshop. Registration for Sewing in the Street classes are FREE (donations are accepted), but students must be registered online before attending.

To keep registration fair for all, please register for only one spot.
