What do soccer, Scrabble, and Super Mario have in common? They’re games; purposefully designed to motivate, challenge, and entertain. Each week, we’ll examine a unique principle of game design, adding to our understanding of what makes some activities fun and others frustrating. Then with just few art supplies and your imagination, you’ll apply those principles to prototype games of your own all without touching a computer!

Why are there no computers? Many think of game design and game development as the same thing, when they are far from it. In practice, "game design" is a branch of design aimed at fostering play regardless of the medium, whereas "game development" is a discipline that specifically involves coding and computer science. In this class, we explore and understand the fundamentals of game design which will empower the student to apply those fundamentals to any number of mediums in the future.
