Creating Space for Young Adults in Art
The context of this 3 session Saturday Teen/Young Adult workshop is to educate, challenge, and inspire. Art Educator Julie Swenson will guide teen participants through community building exercises and engage in dynamic conversations centered on art. Teens will reflect on current issues allowing themselves to explore and constructively discuss relevant topics that our nation is facing. Gallery discussions will highlight the work of contemporary artists who are on view at the Museum.
Through informal conversations and hands-on art activities together students will raise awareness around diversity through art.
Portfolio Development
The art portfolio class prepares students for competitive admissions into art schools, universities, or specialized high schools by fostering the development of a cohesive, high-quality body of work. Participants refine technical skills in various media (drawing, painting, sculpture, 2D design) while focusing on personal style, observational skills, and thematic exploration.
Teen Open Studio
Our open studio time, designed for teens 14-18, is an opportunity for students to come into the museum and utilize our materials and resources to work on independant and collaborative projects at their own pace.
Material Magic
Why work with one medium when you can Mix it Up? Explore paint, drawing materials, soft materials, and found materials in this class designed for kids ages 4-7. Kids will learn techniques in a variety of media and make both two and three-dimensional works of art.
Get Creative with Clay
Students will be able to explore and create unique works of art out of air-dry clay! We will be exploring different sculpting techniques, shapes, and designs to create functional or decorative pieces. Students will be given the choice: What do you want to make?
Time Travelers: Making Art Through the Ages
Pack your imagination — we’re traveling through time to explore how artists across history have expressed their worlds! From prehistoric caves to the colorful motion of modern sculpture, students will uncover the stories behind great works of art and bring them to life through hands-on projects. Each week, we’ll experiment with new materials and techniques inspired by artists of the past: painting with natural pigments like early cave artists, designing Roman mosaics, printing waves in the style of Hokusai, painting vibrant still lifes like Van Gogh, and crafting mobiles inspired by Alexander Calder. By the end of our journey, students will have their own mini “timeline of art” — a gallery of works that show how creativity connects us across time.
Fabric Fun Lab
This camp will introduce younger kids to fabric and fiber processes and techniques, leaving a lot of room for open ended experimentation with materials.
the Art of Collaboration
This five-day camp is designed for students ages 10–15 to explore art as a collaborative, social process. Each day begins with sustained work on a shared, large- scale collaborative painting that evolves over the week. Additional projects emphasize teamwork, negotiation, shared decision-making, and the experience of creating art for public and semi-public spaces within a museum environment. Students will work individually within group structures, learning how their personal ideas contribute to a collective whole. The week culminates in multiple collaborative artworks and installations that reflect both individual identities and group cohesion.
Weaving with Shape and Color
Learn to weave with different textures and color! You will create your own unique drawing using yarn! Experimenting with different types of weaving, you will play with inventing your own landscape!
