The Secret Life of the Letter "V"

Explore the unexpected graphic and narrative characteristics of one single letter form using printmaking and bookarts. We will make one, 8-page accordion handprinted book using a letter of your choice.

Letters are glyphs representing ancient archetypes. In this workshop we explore peculiarities of a single glyph/letter using type, stamps and/or stencils. We will print using water based inks into an accordion book we will first construct for the purpose or printing directly into.  Both the book and the print are in the service of expanding the graphic possibilities inherent in the repetition of one single letter form through placement, scale and color.

It’s a little book arts, a little printmaking combined with a 2D design lesson all rolled into one deceptively simple project.  By isolating one single letter, the familiar can be seen with a fresh set of eyes giving permission to explore meaning through a narrative structure. We will explore ink rollout, viscosity, application as well as discussing type face, historical context and graphic form.  The accordion book lesson addresses paper grain and a fail safe folding technique.
