Mixed Age

A Mixed-Age Family Class is the essential Music Together class, one that a child can attend from birth through age four through all nine song collections. This basic class follows the recommendations of child development researchers - grouping children of a variety of ages - because this fosters natural, family-style learning.

Younger children enjoy watching and imitating older ones; older children learn by leading younger ones; and adults are happy because children in the same family can go to class together.

Each child participates at his or her own level in singing, moving, chanting, listening, watching, or exploring musical instruments. Any caregivers - parents, grandparents, nanny - can bring the children. The whole family is welcome for this important family music experience.

Babies Only

Every child’s development benefits from early exposure to music and movement. Because the early months are so important, Music Together offers two options for babies. Babies from birth on up may attend a Mixed Age class, whether registered on their own or attending with an older brother or sister. (Infant siblings attend free until 8 months of age.)

Babies seven months or under (at the time of registration) may also take this special “Babies Only Class” offered as a one-semester introduction to Music Together. The music activities and materials are specially designed for parents who want to learn as much as possible about music development in babies. Meet other parents of newborns and learn some fascinating music activities you can recreate at home with your baby.

Generations Class

'Generations' classes are regular Mixed Age Family classes, but held in a senior living residences. People of all ages come together to sing, dance, shake shakers, and swing scarves during this weekly intergenerational class.

As the children’s music-learning is nurtured, babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and their grownups also foster new and important relationships with "Musical Grandfriends." These unique and powerful classes are also greatly enjoyed by the seniors and staff. Seniors look forward to the children's lively visits, the chance to share memories, and the sheer fun of these playful music-making experiences. The additional cognitive, physical, and emotional benefits for both children and elders make the Generations class a win-win for all participants. We currently offer one Generations class on Fridays at 10:30 AM in Santa Rosa.

Rhythm Kids Level 1 (4-5 yrs)
Rhythm Kids Level 1 is the next musical step for your preschool child (ages 4–5), and a parent or caregiver is welcome to stay in class, but it's not required. Each week we drum, sing, dance, play rhythm instruments, and begin to play music-based games. Rhythm Kids Level 1 guides children toward developmentally appropriate music and movement activities, where they can begin to take charge, lead others, and be musically creative, as they:
• make up their own drumming patterns;
• invent new ways to play rhythm instruments (shakers, sticks, etc.);
• create movement ideas for songs;
• and even take a drum solo!
Drums will be provided for the class each week (or you can bring your own). Just add hands!
Rhythm Kids Level 2 (K-2nd gr.)
Rhythm Kids Level 2 is an exciting music, movement, and drumming class for children in Kindergarten through second grade. Children integrate and assimilate rhythm into their lives, as they:
• learn multicultural drumming patterns
• develop new repertoire on various percussion instruments
• explore movement and dance while singing songs
• play games based on music and drumming
• have fun with a host of rhythm activities
Rhythm Kids follows through on the Music Together® vision to help children complete the pathway of early childhood music development from birth through age 8. As part of the Rhythm Kids experience, children and their grownups can enjoy drumming play and practice sessions at home with the help of online play-along videos featuring Rhythm Kids creator Tom Foote.
Students should have their own hand drum for use at home (and potentially for use in class— please check with Ginger).

Online Mixed Age

Created in Spring 2020 and continuing this summer - We bring Music Together to families at home during the pandemic rules for gathering. Families will join our local SRA Music Together teachers for Mixed Age classes via Zoom, as well as weekly links to videos of our teachers leading Music Together activities (this summer, we're using the "Kazoo Collection"). Besides the weekly zoom classes and pre-recorded video content, families are invited to join a private Enrolled Families Facebook Group, where they'll have access to fun content such as pop-up occasional live experiences through Facebook live videos, extra Zoom classes, activity downloads for the kids, videos of instrument-making at home, and the chance to upload your own videos from home and chat with our community.

Online Rhythm Kids- Levels combined, 4-8 years

Occasionally, we combine the 2 levels of Rhythm Kids to make one class. In this case, we style the lessons to cover a larger age range. This is a great alternative, and still a lot of fun and learning for both age groups!

This is an online version created in Spring 2020, and continuing this summer- we'll bring Music Together to families at home under the pandemic rules for gatherings. Includes many of the bonus activities under "Music Together Online," above.
