"Little Wings" Parent-Tot Class (6 week session)

Fun, active music and movement class for kids age 6 months - 4 years with a parent or guardian. Wear comfortable clothing and be prepared to move around a lot in class!

We sing, we dance, we play musical games and a good time is generally had by all. The syllabus includes music and games from around the world, including Latin America, Germany, France, the British Isles, Finland, Africa and more. It's a great way to meet other moms (or dads), and little ones love both the class and the CDs that go with them. Each quarter, we use a different selection of music and your class fee includes a book and CD of the music we will use in class, except summer session, where we use my award-winning, professionally produced book and CD, "A Spoonful of Songs", which are available to students at the special price of only $15 for both together, and are available in my store (email me for discount code). Parents consistently tell me my CDs are on repeat in their stereo and that they are the only thing their kiddo wants to listen to in the car.

Research consistently shows that exposing young children to music improves their cognitive, language and musical skills later in life. Babies and toddlers have more connective tissue in their brains, and active musical play actually strengthens their brains' white matter, enabling them to interpret musical tones and rhythms better than you or I probably can. Years of teaching music to young children has shown me that kids can more easily hear tonal and pitch differences than adults, and if they solidify that ability now, it will stay with them for life.

Big Strings Uke For Grown-Ups, Level 2 (6wk)

Building on "Big Strings, Level I", this class assumes you know some basic chords and strumming patterns. If you've gotten that far, and are looking to challenge yourself a bit more, you're welcome to join us!

Right now we are a fun, relaxed group of ladies working on a few songs together, including Izzie's "Somewhere Over the Rainbow", Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" and a little Hawaiian tune, "Green Rose Hula", to name a few. In January, we'll keep on jamming on these, and learn a few new songs as well. We welcome newcomers - don't be shy!

Mythology, Culture & Puppetry (14 wk)

Intended for kids age 6-10. (There may be some wiggle room; by all means reach out if you have a kid who's super interested and just outside the age range.)

During the 14-week session, we will explore Viking culture in a variety of ways, including reading (both non-fiction and mythology), coloring pages and music. Each student will choose a character from Norse mythology to develop and begin building their puppet, which we will work on gradually over a period of several weeks. If we have time, we may also build props and a set. The class will culminate in a puppet play, performed for parents, in which we bring all the elements together.

This is a drop-off class for three hours. Send kids with a snack. We will take a long break in the middle for unstructured outdoor play in my kid-friendly yard, which has swings, a sandbox and lots of other fun things.

Want a discount? Parents: If you know how to sew, and can attend class and help out, I'd be happy to negotiate a significant discount on the class price.

Mythology, Culture & Puppetry Workshop

Intended for kids age 6-10. (There may be some wiggle room; by all means reach out if you have a kid who's super interested and just outside the age range.)

In this three day workshop, we will study the myth of Thor's Hammer . Each student will choose a character from Norse mythology to develop and begin building their puppet. The class will culminate in a puppet play, performed for parents, in which we bring all the elements together.

This is a drop-off class for two and a half hours. We will take a break in the middle for unstructured outdoor play in my kid-friendly yard, which has swings, a sandbox and lots of other fun things. Send kids with a snack.

Parents: If you know how to sew, and can stay and help out, please let me know! I need some volunteers.

I am only charging for materials because I've never taught this class before. I'm offering a full-length class in fall in which we'll go into much greater depth in studying Viking culture and Norse mythology.

Ukelele Band

A great opportunity for students to build their ensemble playing skills, boost their confidence and make new friends! We'll build a repertoire of songs and work towards a short concert at the end of the quarter.

Students currently enrolled in private ukelele lessons may join the band if they can play at least the four basic chords C, Am, F & G. The band will be a small group of 2-6 kids, ages 6-9.

Students also have the option to join the "choir" (another small group which will practice immediately after the ukelele band), and they are also invited to stay for lunch and outdoor play in the yard after the conclusion of choir practice. (Lunch is not provided - please bring your own.)

Choir

We'll learn some fun, seasonal songs from a variety of cultures and perform them for parents and at the local senior center at the quarter's end. This will be a small group of 4-10 students. Choir students are also invited to stay afterwards for lunch and outdoor play, until 1pm. (Lunch is not provided - please bring your own!)

Open to kids ages 5-9.
